Zanzibar Rooftop
Morocco in Newtown? Sounds suspicious... Well, if you can’t afford the plane fare to Marrakesh, this sky-high inner-west watering hole is perfect for a lazy Sunday arvo.
What’s the look? Mosaic tables, wrought iron seating, hanging lanterns and lots of spiky plants framing the view – blue sky and chimney tops! Who’s around? Locals in their 20s and 30s.
Good cocktails? The classics aren’t bad, but if you’re feeling creative try a concoction like the Crimson Rose, with fresh berries, watermelon, chambourd and Red Bull.
Can I eat here? You bet. The exotic menu makes use of everything from harissa spices to dukkah. Tapas starts at $7 and there’s standard pub grub – steak, burgers, pasta and salads – on offer too.
How’s the soundtrack? It’s typical pop/rock, with good dance tunes on weekends.
Best time to go? Nights for a pre-dinner bevvie. Weekends are busier so get there early or you’ll be standing.
Wow factor? Being here at sunset – or even during an early evening downpour – is pretty cool.
If this bar was an animal, it’d be... A camel, built for comfort rather than speed!
