Velvet

Velvet

The look: red candles, red carpet and red velvet banquettes (naturally), which marry perfectly with the odd, raw-sandstone wall and palmtree wallpaper.
The crowd: a cool mid-20s to mid-30s mix; these underground groovers are friendly and approachable, so it’s easy to meet people.
The vibe: it feels like a party in someone’s funky rumpus room, so be warned – you could pop in for a quick drink and end up staying all night!
At the bar: the vodka and tequila varieties are impressive. Or, sample the crazy cocktail list, with choices such as The 40-Inch Phenomena, a mix of fresh nectarine, tequila, and vanilla and marzipan liqueurs; or a gin, rockmelon and schnapps concoction known as Princess Blossom’s Seaside Picnic (both $15.50).
Who to take: mates who like to mingle or a lover to snuggle with in a darkened corner.
Sounds pretty cosy: you know it. This tiny basement bar is definitely The Beauchamp Hotel’s best-kept secret.
