Subsolo
Sounds subterranean... And it is. Subsolo translates as ‘basement’ in Portuguese – and this Melbourne-style underground lair makes a change from the usual harbour-side hotspots.
The look inside? Exposed brick, cobweb-inspired screens and hanging chairs. Nibble at the bar if you don’t mind communal dining; or, grab a table.
Who’s around? Suits and couples, mainly.
Any creative cocktails? Indeed. Wet your whistle with the ‘Fendy’, a lethal blend of fresh fennel, pomegranate syrup, white Cuban rum and burnt orange oil; or sip the deliciously tangy ‘Snowflake’ with lime juice, pear-infused vodka and Frangelico. ‘The Imposter’ – a mix-your-own tapas-style cocktail – is good for indecisive types.
It’s tapas time... Lucky you! Fill up on Jamon with Catalonian bread ($13), zucchini flowers stuffed with couscous, current and pistachio ($15) or warm roasted peppers oozing goats cheese and topped with a pile of peppery rocket ($17).
If this bar was an animal... It’d be a fun-loving fox.
