Shingles
Getting there: Once you’ve located the nondescript doorway,
press the buzzer and wait to be ushered in. At the top of the stairs, turn
right and head towards the bookcase. Lo and behold, just like the movies, it
opens to reveal the bar behind it.
The look: Given the secret entrance, you’d
expect a space crowded with chandeliers and taxidermy but the reality is a lot
more low-key. Well-worn couches frame an antique fireplace in the alcove, while
the bar and billiard table area are similarly free from the usual designer
distractions.
To drink: There’s not much in the way of pomegranate martinis and
gold-flecked vodka but you will find a perfectly serviceable selection of
beers, wines and spirits.
To eat: Downstairs, the Rochester kitchen puts on a cheap selection
of pub classics.
The crowd: Local musos and Fitzroy regulars.
Best for: A
back-to-basics night out.
