1806
The Look: 1806 is a kind of cocktail apothecary featuring, amongst other things, a collection of vintage shakers and mixing equipment. Understated, with an old-world aura, the venue comprises a ground floor bar and mezzanine area with table seating.
To drink: Here’s where it gets educational. 1806 is named in honour of the year cocktails apparently first made their mark in print and the drinks list highlights the most significant mixes of each decade since. Try the Aviation (gin, violet liqueur and lemon) which dates back to 1916, or perhaps you’d like to revisit the late 1880s with a Tom & Jerry (hot chocolate custard, whiskey and bourbon).
To eat: You’re here for a past-to-present cocktail tour but if you insist on snacks, there’s a small selection of toasted sandwiches.
The vibe: refined.
Best for: Alcohol historians and would-be bartenders. 1806 also runs occasional how-to classes which takes you through the classics.
